Burnout syndrome or “work exhaustion” is the answer to chronic and persistent emotional stress, characterized by physical and emotional exhaustion, tendency to consider people as objects, a sense of loss of meaning of one’s work and reduced productivity. It generally affects those who are employed in the helping professions, in emergencies, in the social like doctors, nurses, policemen, firefighters, social workers, caregivers, but it can also affect other categories of workers, such as categories of customer service, sales representatives, hyperactive, hyper-connected work force crushed by a thousand commitments between work and family. Women men would be more exposed to the danger of psycho-physical exhaustion. It can happen to feel a bit emptied, have little energy, low motivation at work, feeling crushed by commitments. The motivations can be many: complex deadlines, problems with work colleagues, new serious factors of family stress. Professional burnout goes beyond the necessity of a simple holiday or a family retreat and the experts identify in the long-term and unsolvable burnout a real health problem that can become a disease chronic. The most common causes of burnout at work At work there are a number of stressors that can result in burnout and may be the cause of outbursts of rage towards colleagues or clients or family members; loss of appetite and passion for things that were once loved; inability to find a motivation. Here are the most common causes of burnout at work: – New software, organizational changes, change of tasks – Unrealistic terms and deadlines – Frequent conflicts in job scheduling or interruptions – Programs that change often – For those who do manual work, exposure to the elements and the lifting of heavy loads – Increase of responsibility without the right compensation – Difficult interactions with colleagues or clients According to Christina Maslach, professor of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, who conducted a study on burnout, the signs of this malaise are: 1- Feeling dried up emotionally, suffering from nausea, not being able to sleep and overcoming common diseases like colds 2 – Feeling alienated from colleagues and bosses, feeling constantly underestimated or ostracized 3 – Having the feeling of not being able to give the best When people start to have this kind of problems at work it is not uncommon absenteeism, making mistakes, being distracted.
